A trail of clues leads them from an empty bell tower to a suspicious handcart, a replacement bell, and finally an abandoned signal shed where the original Midnight Bell has been forgotten. With midnight approaching, the boys uncover the truth, restore an old Trainland tradition, and return home with one final lesson: sometimes the most important clue is knowing when to ask for help.

Product Description

Trainland is glowing with silver and gold lights for a special New Year’s Eve celebration when Mr. Whitaker arrives with something Tanner and Tyler know all too well—the mysterious silver pocket watch from the Old Depot. Along with it is a strange handwritten message telling them to take the watch before the final bell of the year. One final warning is written at the bottom: “Midnight is missing.” Moments later, the watch springs open, the station clock spins backward, and Tanner and Tyler are swept into Trainland’s past.
They arrive at an earlier New Year’s Eve celebration with only thirty minutes until midnight—and immediately discover the problem. Trainland’s Midnight Bell, which is supposed to ring twelve times before the first train of the new year departs, has vanished from its tower. Tanner and Tyler begin searching for clues, finding scratch marks, a wet trail, a handcart, silver ribbon, and a nervous maintenance worker named Eddie Walsh. But Tanner soon notices something that does not fit: the tower brackets are old and rusty, suggesting the missing bell may not have been hanging there at all.
Following the trail behind the station, the boys discover a polished replacement bell hidden in a crate. Eddie admits that the tower was already empty when he checked it earlier that day. Afraid the celebration would be ruined, he secretly tried to find another bell and move it into place. That explains the cart, ribbon, and glitter—but it still leaves one question: where is the real Midnight Bell?
A mysterious BONG leads everyone farther down an old siding to an abandoned signal shed. Inside hangs a weathered brass bell with a faded sign identifying it as the original Trainland Midnight Bell, first rung on New Year’s Eve in 1952. The strange ringing turns out to have a much less supernatural explanation—a squirrel has been moving the rope. Tanner realizes they do not need to move the old bell back to the station. They simply need to ring the real Midnight Bell where it stands.
As midnight arrives, Tanner and Tyler pull the rope together and ring the original bell twelve times. The crowd cheers, the train whistles, fireworks fill the sky—and the silver pocket watch carries the boys back to the present. There, they discover that almost no time has passed. Tanner also finds one final message tucked beside the watch: “Ask for help.” The case has not been about changing history so much as remembering a forgotten tradition—and learning that some problems are easier to solve when no one tries to solve them alone.
